Specialty handling
Specialty items are priced off weight, access and the gear they need, not off a flat surcharge. Here is exactly what each one gets, and what we need from you before we quote it.
Piano and specialty itemsSpinet, console and studio uprights ride upright on a piano board, strapped at the case and never at the legs. Above three steps we switch to a powered stair-climbing dolly. Tuning is not included: let the instrument sit two weeks in the new humidity before you book a tuner.
The lid is locked, the lyre and all three legs come off and travel in their own cartons, and the case goes on its side onto a padded skid board. Anything crossing a state line is crated: the skid is built into a plywood shell so nothing can be stacked against the soundboard.
We need the model number before quoting, because the dolly rating and the crew size come straight off the manufacturer's weight. Above 1,000 lb we check the floor structure below the route and will not take a safe up more than two flights of wooden stairs without a written engineer sign-off.
Framed pieces up to 48 in on the long edge go in a telescoping mirror carton with corner protectors. Above that, or for anything you would not want to replace, we build a crate: glassine over the face, acid-free tissue, 2 in ethafoam blocking, a 3/8 in plywood shell on 1x3 pine cleats, a foil moisture barrier and tip-and-tell indicators on two faces.
Three-piece slate comes up in sections, the rails and pockets are boxed separately and the felt is usually sacrificed. Re-levelling and new felt at the destination is booked as a separate visit by the mechanic, normally two to three days after delivery.
Crystal drops come off and are wrapped in labelled bags, arms are tagged to their positions, and the body is suspended inside a crate rather than resting on a face. Disconnection and reconnection at the ceiling is electrician work and we schedule it around the crew.
A crater measures every face on the pre-move survey and prices the build. Crate charges are quoted by the cubic foot of finished crate, not by the value of the item.
Crates are built in our Freedom Drive shop before move day. Book specialty items at least a week out in peak season.
3/8 in plywood faces, 1x3 pine cleats, screwed not nailed, with foam blocking cut to the item so it never touches a panel.
Every crate is stencilled with its contents, an arrow for orientation and a crate number that matches the inventory sheet.
